Humor Styles
"Humor can act as a social lubricant or a social retardant in the educational setting. It can educate or denigrate, heal or harm, embrace or deface. It's a powerful communication tool, no matter which side is chosen."
(Pg. 14 The Laughing Classroom)
Joy Master vs. Joke Maker vs. Life Mocker vs. Fun Meister
It is crucial for us to identify our humor style--it is such a powerful tool--we need to use it in an empowering manner!
Please discuss ways we can utilize this information to make our classrooms, colleagues, and schools better.

I think it is important to know your humor style and the others around you so you can bring out your best qualities. When I checked my own humor style I found that while my style does have some good qualities there are some that I need to avoid. What I liked about the reading was that it talked about who to combine yourself with to bring out the best. We work with all kinds of people and can't get along with everyone but if we align ourselves with the right kind of people we can be a more positive influence on those around us. It would be nice if we were all joy masters but unfortunately we are not. I also think it is important to be aware of the good and bad traits we have with our humor so that we can improve.
I would consider myself to be a "fun meister" and that doesn't always mix real well with the "life mocker's" that we have in our school. I am the type of guy who will catch someone else's e-mail still logged on in the teachers workroom and send out a silly e-mail poking fun at the person who was still logged in. I grow tired of some people who are still teaching but don't really want to be there any more, and who find school to be way to serious. They rip on teachers who are honored in the yearbook every year, because those who are dedicated in the yearbook are too close to their students. A few teachers and I have created a no whine zone at lunch. If you are in a bad mood and want to rip on administration or students get out of our zone. WE will have fun with "The Life Mockers" and send crankiness out. We have all been warned of leaving the zone, but then it brings people back to reality.
